Girl with Poppy Garland and Carnation (Mariucca).

Kiprensky Orest Adamovich
1819. Oil on canvas. 42.5 х 40.9 cm. Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia.
One of the most intimate and poetic masterpieces of Russian Romanticism, painted during Kiprensky's first stay in Italy. The model is a young Italian girl, Anna Maria Falcucci (nicknamed Mariuccia), whose life became inextricably bound to the artist (she would later become his wife). Blending portraiture with an idyllic genre study, Kiprensky uses gentle chiaroscuro, a vivid wreath of red poppies, and a soulful, innocent gaze to encapsulate the vulnerability, warmth, and grace of childhood.
