The Beloved (Bride)

The Beloved (Bride)

Dante Gabriel Rossetti
1866. Oil on canvas. 80x76 cm. Tate Gallery, London, UK.

A key Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece by Dante Gabriel Rossetti depicting a scene from the Old Testament's Song of Solomon. Two passages from the biblical text are inscribed on the picture's original gilded frame. The bride is captured in the act of pulling back her veil, flanked by four bridesmaids and a young African page holding a golden vase of roses. Rossetti creates a rich, complex interplay of skin tones and hair colors surrounding the central bride, a composition strongly influenced by Venetian master Titian and by Rossetti's encounter with Édouard Manet's Olympia during a trip to Paris.
