The Wounded Angel

The Wounded Angel

Hugo Simberg
1903. Oil on canvas. 154 x 127 cm. Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki, Finland.

The quintessential masterpiece of Finnish Symbolism by Hugo Simberg, voted Finland's "National Painting" in 2006. The composition depicts two solemn-faced young boys carrying a blindfolded, injured angel on a stretcher along the shores of Töölönlahti in Helsinki. Simberg intentionally declined to offer an official interpretation of the work, allowing viewers to find their own personal and allegorical meanings. Created while recovering from a life-threatening illness (meningitis), the painting touches on themes of suffering, vulnerability, and quiet hope.
