Crucifixion

Lucas Cranach the Elder
1532. Oil on canvas. 76.2 x 54.61 cm. Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, USA.

As court painter to the Electors of Saxony in Wittenberg, Lucas Cranach was situated at the center of the Protestant Reformation and served as its "official artist". A close friend of Martin Luther, Cranach conceived this work in light of Lutheran theology. The emphasis on witnesses acknowledging Christ's sacrifice reflects the central Lutheran tenet that humanity is reconciled with God solely through faith in Christ's atonement.
