"The Large Bathers" (1884–1887) is a monumental oil painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, currently housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This work represents the pinnacle of Renoir's so-called "Ingres period," characterized by a stylistic shift toward defined contours and classical form. Renoir spent nearly three years perfecting the composition, executing an unprecedented number of preliminary drawings and sketches. The models for the prominent figures in the foreground were Aline Charigot, the artist's future wife, and Suzanne Valadon, a renowned artist's model who later became an accomplished painter herself. The canvas reflects Renoir's ambition to reconcile impressionistic light with the timeless, sculptural traditions of classical art.
