Gustave Courbet

Gustave Courbet

French painter (1819–1877) (1819 – 1877)

Gustave Courbet is the father of French Realism who revolutionized 19th-century painting. Rejecting Salon polish and mythologized ideals, he painted only what he could physically observe: dense human form, raw nature, and the unvarnished reality of everyday life. His heavy palette-knife texture and uncompromising truth dismantled traditional canons, opening the floodgates to modern art.
