Zinaida Serebryakova was one of the first celebrated female painters in Russian art history, hailing from the prestigious Benois-Lanceray artistic dynasty. Born at the Neskuchnoye estate near Kharkiv, she studied at Princess Maria Tenisheva’s art school in St. Petersburg, under Osip Braz, and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. A member of the influential Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) movement, she gained overnight renown with her radiant self-portrait "At the Dressing Table" (1909), which was immediately acquired by the Tretyakov Gallery. Rooted in classical art traditions, Serebryakova's work championed the beauty of the human form, the joy of motherhood, peasant life, and domestic harmony. Following the October Revolution, she endured extreme financial hardship and the loss of her husband. In 1924, she traveled to Paris for a major commission but was unable to return home due to political circumstances. In exile, she continued to work prolifically, producing her acclaimed Moroccan pastel series and European travel sketches. She is buried at the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery near Paris.
